This recommendation is a part of the Halloween Read-A-Thon! I chose to read Carry On for Hauted House- Read a Supernatural book.
Simon Snow is the worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen
That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.
Half the time Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here – it’s their last year at Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.
Carry On is a love letter to love stories and the power of words – to every ‚chosen one‘ who ever had more on their mind than saving the world… (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28356624-carry-on)
Simon is the main character and he´s a very sweet magician, who can´t do magic. At least he´s very bad at it. He´s the chosen one. Chosen to defeat the Great Humdrum. At least that´s what the Mage says. Simon is kind of naive, but he´s also brave and loyal.
First he´s in a relationship with Agatha and they seem perfect together. Let´s just say that they´re not. His best friend is Penelope, a very helpful sidekick. You don´t really find out a lot about the other characters, they are nice, but you just want the plot to move on to Simon and Baz!
Baz is the nemesis of Simon (or is that the Humdrum?). He´s also a vampire, who lost his mother to other vampires. Isn´t that screwed up? Baz is a very cool and sarcastic character and well he´s in love with Simon. And their relationship will make you want to squeal! I love them both together. Gosh, so much perfection in one book!
Why I recommend this book:
I think that Carry On is a very sweet book with amazing characters and if you´ve read Fangirl, you just have to love this. I really hoped that Rainbow Rowell would write all seven Simon Snow books, like in Fangirl. But at least she wrote this one!
The novel Carry On is basically a fanfiction that has been published. Yes, it resembles the Harry Potter series, but that seemed like it was the author’s intention.
The only “bad” things about the book, are the many chapters that aren´t about Simon and Baz! It´s like, you just want to keep reading about them and not about the other characters.
I would love a sequel, but I´m pretty sure that the author won´t write one. It feels like the end of the story, but at least you can read a lot of Snowbaz fanfiction.
I recommend this book to:
- Rainbow Rowell fans
- Fans of Fangirl
- People who read fanfiction, especially Drarry (Draco/Harry) shippers
- Harry Potter fans
- Fan of fantasy, vampire stories or magical stories
- LGBTQ+ genre lovers
